The Shaper Work Style
The Shaper is an Action oriented role and is the most competitive of all the nine Belbin work roles. The role is one of natural leadership that can galvanise a group into action. The Shaper is in their element when cutting through red tape and challenging beaucrary, political complications and overcoming obstacles. It is a very attacking role. They thrive in working at a high pace and under pressure and put pressure onto others. Classically an anxious extrovert they possess a lot of nervous energy and a great need for achievement. A group that lacks drive requires the energy and immediacy of a Shaper.
An “allowable weakness” is their tendency to be prone to provocation, principally because someone who is challenging, dynamic and thrives under pressure will tend to step on toes.
A “non-allowable weakness” is the Shaper’s inability to recover a situation with good humour – and must get out of the mindset that deliberately upsetting others is a virtue.
The “do” and “don’t” in dealing with an Shaper
Importantly in communicating with the individual it is essential be factual. Shapers have difficulty in dealing with vague people and vague ideas.
