Do you have this person in your business - The Belbin 'Implementer' Work Style
The Belbin® “Implementer” Work Style
The Implementer is a committed company person who plays an ACTION role within the business. Dutiful and loyal, they are prepared to work hard for the sake of the business. In saying that, Implementers are not afraid to “push back” when confronted with a request to handle numerous tasks in a tight time frame and when doing so will nominate the work required for the sake of the business.
Implementers work best for a Manager who has definite ideas on their requirements as they can then enable their disciplined, systematic and structured thinking to bear fruit. The downside to having a systematic way of functioning means that the Implementer may be uncomfortable with change, especially if the proposed change is dramatic and unproven. Principally this is because change impacts on the Implementer’s pride and joy – a systematic way of doing things. This is considered an “allowable weakness” – the price to be paid or the flip side of the strengths of the Implementer.
A “non-allowable weakness” is when the Implementer obstructs change. In these circumstances the individual must accept temporary lapses in efficiency while new structures are put in place. A balance between perseverance and adaptability is the key.
Key points to consider when dealing with an Implementer.
Importantly in communicating with an Implementer it is essential to give them responsibility in organising things – remember they “implement” - it is their key contribution to the business. In addition explain things with clarity and in a logical, systematic and step-by-step way. Do not use the Implementer as a sounding board for wild ideas as the Implementer is all about practicality, not change.
In his classic nine year study on why business teams succeed or fail Dr. R Meredith Belbin found in the team scenarios that the role of the Implementer was crucial to business success.
